A woman in a polka-dot bandana and work shirt stands ready, wrench in her gloved hand, eyes lifted toward the soldier charging through the clouds above her.
Adolph Treidler created this 1943 poster to recruit women into the ordnance factories that kept American troops armed and moving. The "WOW"—Woman Ordnance Worker—program was one of the most vital home-front efforts of World War II, putting hundreds of thousands of women into the plants that produced everything from bullets to bombs.
In the foreground she is solid, capable, and focused on the task at hand. Behind her the soldier moves forward, rifle ready, the two figures linked by the clear message that her work supports his fight. The composition is classic wartime illustration: dramatic sky, strong color, and an unmistakable sense of shared purpose.
