In 1943, as the tide of World War II began to turn, Austrian-born artist Henry Koerner created this powerful piece for the Office of War Information (OWI Poster No. 64). It was part of a coordinated campaign to reinforce Allied solidarity at a moment when unity among nations with very different flags and histories was the only path to victory.
The image shows a battery of massive artillery barrels angled skyward, each emblazoned with the flag of a key Allied power—Union Jack, Stars and Stripes, Chinese Republic, Soviet hammer and sickle, and others—firing in unison. Their shells streak upward into a dramatic, fiery sky filled with bursting explosions and smoke, a visual metaphor for overwhelming combined firepower.
