About the product

In the early 1970s, as the Vietnam War dragged into its final bitter phase, artist Roland Winkler created this powerful composite image that drew a direct visual parallel between the suffering of North American Indians and the Vietnamese people. Part of a series of protest prints, it confronts the moral weight of American military involvement abroad while invoking the long domestic history of broken treaties and displaced indigenous nations.

A jagged American flag, shaped like the Statue of Liberty draped in stars and stripes, rises vertically through the center of the composition. To the left, stoic portraits of Native American men, women, and children gaze outward, many in traditional dress, some armed. To the right, Vietnamese civilians and fighters — including a helmeted soldier and a woman with rifle — mirror the same expressions of resolve and hardship. The background swirls with stylized smoke, flames, and conflict imagery that binds the two groups in shared tragedy under the American symbol.
