In 1918, as American forces fought in Europe, the call went out for massive financial support to sustain the war effort. Artist Z. P. Nikolaki answered with this striking poster, part of the intense Liberty Loan campaigns that financed the final push toward victory.
A personified Statue of Liberty, crown radiant and expression urgent, grips an old candlestick telephone in one hand and the receiver to her ear with the other. She speaks directly to the viewer against a simple teal backdrop, her draped gown evoking classical strength while the modern telephone delivers the message with immediacy: billions of dollars are needed, and needed now. The bold typography at the bottom drives the point home without ornament.
