James Montgomery Flagg created this icon in 1917 to fill the ranks of the U.S. Army as America entered World War I. Flagg, who modeled Uncle Sam on his own face, produced one of the most effective recruiting images in American history—millions of copies plastered walls and stirred countless young men to enlist. The original even left space below the text so local recruiting stations could stamp their address.
Here he stands in the classic stars-and-stripes top hat and suit, red bow tie crisp, white hair and beard flowing, eyes locked on with unmistakable intensity. The bold red lettering below drives the point home: I WANT YOU FOR U.S. ARMY, followed by the nearest recruiting station.
