In 1897, P.T. Barnum & Bailey’s “Greatest Show on Earth” brought the fury of the Sudan campaigns straight to American fairgrounds. This chromolithograph advertised one of their most ambitious live battle recreations: a full-scale theatrical clash between British redcoats and Mahdist warriors, complete with cavalry charges, rifle fire, and enough pyrotechnics to rattle the seats. Strobridge Lithographing Company turned the chaos into this vivid poster — part newsreel, part showmanship — capitalizing on public fascination with Britain’s imperial wars in the years after Khartoum.
What you’re looking at is pure Victorian spectacle: British infantry in red tunics and white helmets storm forward with bayonets fixed, a Highland piper in the thick of it, while Mahdist fighters on foot and horseback counterattack with spears and swords. A Union Jack snaps overhead on the left, a white charger rears amid the smoke and explosions on the right, and the whole scene crackles with the kind of over-the-top energy that packed tents night after night.
Printed from the high-resolution Library of Congress scan with all the original chromolithograph character and bold color preserved. Available in sizes from modest to wall-dominating — ready to roll out history with maximum impact. Add this one to your cart and you’ll have the best conversation piece in the room.
